You might not know it, but it the Cynon Valley has its own community radio station. Dapper FM, currently based in Jacs Live Music venue, Aberdare, has been the community radio station for the Cynon Valley for the last twelve years. We need help though.
In recent years the station has only been ticking over. It has been kept alive by a small but dedicated band of volunteers, ensuring there are live broadcasts going out every week. But the connection with the community is minimal. We want to change that.
For the station to be meaningful, it needs the community to be more involved.
WHAT IS A COMMUNITY RADIO STATION?
Community Radio is the voice of the community. It is an opportunity to get local news, to hear about local events and find out what is going on. It is a place where clubs and societies, can tell people about their work. Local businesses can tell people about the services they offer.
It is also a place where people can learn about radio, pick up new skills and learn how to broadcast a show. It is an opportunity to help build a stronger community.
EVERYTHING IS IN PLACE – ALL WE NEED IS PEOPLE
We have a fully functioning studio that broadcasts music on the internet 24 hours a day on www,dapperfm.co.uk. We have several live shows a week – but we want more.
The studio, formerly based in Penywaun, is now kindly hosted by the amazing people in Jacs live music venue. So there is an opportunity to connect the station with the hottest touring live bands and all the best up and coming local talent.
It has the potential to be the biggest and best station in the valleys. But it needs people.
HOW CAN THE COMMUNITY GET INVOLVED?
We need more presenters to host live shows. They could be music, sports, community interest, hobby related, current affairs – this possibilities are limitless.
More importantly we need people to help with the running of the station. Helping to raise funds, spread the word about the station, involve local communities, keep our computers functioning and help organise everyone.
WANT TO KNOW MORE?
On 23rd February we are holding a public meeting in Jacs for interested people to come along. We are looking for volunteers, but also people who are generally interested. We need listeners to and it will be helpful if we know that the community actually wants a community radio station. So if you have any interest at all, please come along.
We will open the studio up for people to have a look around and you can ask questions.
We are also plotting a social event after – watch this space.
